Single review: Downfall // Dream On, Dreamer

Occasionally a new band bursts onto the scene and each inch of you is ridiculously confident that this band will take part in something called world domination. Since the very beginning, even those who don’t necessarily get excited over fresh bands have been hyping on about Melbourne’s Dream On, Dreamer, and rightly so.

In approximately two years, the sextet has achieved an admirable file of accomplishments. The release of an impressive demo and step up to this, debut EP Hope have drawn in legions of dedicated fans. Many support slots of reputable bands such as Pierce The Veil, Attack Attack!, Emmure, Haste The Day and The Amity Affliction have since arisen, and in some cases, the band impressively overshone some of these names in terms of their talent and crowd pulling abilities. Alongside this came the signing of contracts with label management UNFD, The Artery Foundation and Rise Records. The band recorded their debut full length Heartbound at Chango Studio’s earlier this year.

The hard working, modest and down to earth band gave us our first taste of the album due out on August 5th (August 9 USA) with single number one, “Downfall”. The track begins with a buzz of synth thanks to keys player Daniel Jungwirth and then showcases a chaotic yet skilfully structured full band intro after a sound of shattering glass, before Marcel Gadacz joins in with his distinct and fierce trademark vocals. Gadacz’s ‘When the dark throws you down / and you learn to survive / you wake up and remember / what it’s like to be alive’ contrasts superbly with the unique and easy to listen to clean vocals of bassist Michael ‘Mcoy’ McLeod’.

‘We Are the Living Dead’, a powerful “pit call” from Gadacz is infectious for the hordes of fans which the band has earned and this comes before the second half of the crucial combination - a breakdown to get arms swinging in the pit. The breakdown has a sneaky hint of Jungwirth dubstep incorporated, a wise move considering the electronic music has reached a new high in popularity recently. Lyrically Gadacz’s style hasn’t drastically changed, but appears to be much more personal in comparison to earlier material. He yells, ‘Don’t be scared of any new endeavours’, which almost shadows the subject matter of single “Ambitions” from Hope. With an energetic display from Aaron Fiocca (drums) and guitarists Luke Domic and Callan Orr we’re lead into another flawless Mcoy sung chorus. The production sees Mcoy’s vocals a little more edited than in preceding material, more than what is needed in my opinion as his vocals are pure and faultless when they are kept raw. This decision is a slightly risky move which could see the band be likened “to everyone else in the scene” by those who pay little attention and are quick to judge on one listen only. However, this type of accusation couldn’t be more incorrect, as Dream On, Dreamer is a breath of fresh air.

An ambient guitar line, presumably Orr written is followed by an always impressive Fiocca drum fill before final few lines of the song are passionately sung by Gadacz and a beastly gang in the form of, ‘Stop pretending / that our world will keep turning’.

If “Downfall” is anything to go by, Dream On, Dreamer is, as expected several years back, going to absolutely thrive and lead the masses which they have already begun to inspire. With Dream On, Dreamer consistently raising the bar in the scene, it’s clear to see they have the ability to overrule their rivals in a clear bright future.
