Street Boners // Gavin McInnes

Not many books can claim that even their copyright and dedication pages are downright hilarious. Street Boners, however, definitely can.

I’ve never heard of Gavin McInnes, Vice Magazine, or Street Carnage. I had no idea what was in store, but from descriptions of the book and articles about McInnes, it was clear…this guy’s commentaries are scathing! Based on the books subtitles, “1,764 Hipster Fashion Jokes,” I was expecting very witty jokes.

On the bright side of what I actually got, are:
- “A Brief History of Cool,” featuring greasers, beatniks, mods, hippies, pinks, the disco/hardcore/big boom 80s, metalheads, rap, grunge, and finally, things I’ve been alive to experience: indie rock, ravers, and hipsters.
- Do & Don’t rules including shoes, hair, pants, socks, and even facial hair.
- An interview with The Cobrasnake (LA), Pregnant Goldfish (Montreal), Kim Taylor Bennett (London), Last Night’s Party (NY) and The Final Word, London vs. Montreal vs. NY vs. LA, with The Arab Parrot, who has never been to Montreal.

On the downside of what I got:
- A really confusing rating system, in which the ratings often don’t match with the tone of the captions, and hot girls, no matter how ridiculous the outfit, get a higher number of “kittens.”
- Ambiguous captions that make you wonder if McInnes is complimenting or insulting a person.
- Really unnecessary photos of inanimate objects, almost as if 1,764 was a pre-determined number and he ran out of outfits.
- Unneeded and distracting obscenities that only take away from the text.
- And although I talked about the Do & Don’t rules as a good thing, some of the rules are a bit ridiculous and only made me roll my eyes rather than want to take fashion advice from the book.

There are a few redeeming qualities about Street Boners, like the interview with the author, conducted by the author himself, was hilarious, informative, and surprisingly, didn’t go very well. When the commentary is funny, it is funny, and even the photographer credits are entertaining.

I don’t really want to talk too much about the contents of the book because, what fun are hipster jokes if you’ve heard them all? Here are just a few of my favorite captions:
“Jesus Christ, ladies, are you trying to pose yourselves to death?”
“Normal girls dressed up “sexy” is a great way to see women through gay eyes.”
“I want to kill myself just to get her attention.”
“Hey, sorry I had to put you on hold. There was a fire in the building, and all I could grab was a blanket, a toddler’s hair, and some hash dealer’s “trainers.” Are you still there?”

To quote the back cover, “in short, if you hate eye candy and laughing your ass off, this book is not for you.”
