Change In The Neon Light // Veil Veil Vanish
Before I even heard a note off of Change In The Neon Light, comparisons like The Cure mixed with Interpol made me scoff. Yeah right! To begin with, 90% of the time, when I hear comparisons about a band, they are wrong. Most comparisons fall short of expectations, regardless of who is being named, but The Cure, Interpol? It just isn’t possible. Who is going to live up to that reputation? I...

Changing Seasons // Auternus
When I first got my hands on Auternus’ new album, Changing Seasons, I looked over the artwork and I knew instantly that Auternus would be another band looking to impress upon everyone that they are another embodiment of extreme; I expected… well, lyrics, for one thing. I expected heavy, driven, intricate guitar work, crushing drums, and to be screamed, or growled at. I was actually...

What It Takes To Move Forward // Empire! Empire!...
This album is beautifully presented from top to bottom. It’s the first thick album booklet that I have seen in a long time. A photo accompanies every song, and they all have a nice filmy feel. The album took two years to record, and “is a living and breathing document.” It’s no wonder that this entire album has a very nostalgic feel… it is nostalgic. It’s a shame because this album’s standout...

Pushover 2010 Review
Push Over is an annual festival that displays an array of amazing local talent every year, and this year was no exception. There are your few bigger bands to draw in the crowd of course, but the majority of bands on the bill are lower profile who always acquire a huge benefit from the audience that Push Over draws.
I have no idea how it happened, but we made our way to Push Over under the...

Catalyst #001 – Kids With Cameras
We make art for a lot of reasons. We make art to tell stories, to reach people, to make them understand. In other words, we can make art to raise awareness and to create positive change. That’s the kind of art I want to focus on in this column. Not the mass-produced radio top 40, or the same old romantic comedies, but art and artists that inspire, that exist with the hope of making...

Aaron Gillespie @ Lilydale Showgrounds (AUS)
Getting to this show, and not getting lost and being stranded in the middle of nowhere, was our first concern. I always hear of people in America travelling 5hrs to get to shows, but here, travelling for over an hour is a big effort (unless you’re going interstate). So we got the train to the other side of town and thankfully, found our way quite easily. Once the stress of having to find...

Way down in Australia...
Hey there guys. So this is my attempt at an Aussie version of Brits & Pieces. I thought rather than clog up the page with an entry every time I had news to report, I’d try and do a weekly report. I’m based in Melbourne, so naturally my reports will be more Melbourne orientated, but I’ll try and give you news from the rest of Australia too.
So, what went down this week? Most of us were...

American Ghetto // Portugal. The Man
As this album was released to anyone and everyone at the exact same time via internet, this review is based on my immediate reaction and was posted two hours after I first heard any of the songs.
It only took a few songs to realize that this was an outstanding follow-up to last year’s The Satanic Satanist and that it wasn’t going to disappoint. It also didn’t take long to realize that it...
